The Wolverines Italy trip costs up to $800,000

The concluding details on how much expenditure did Michigan’s eight day trip to Italy cost at the end of April are not all the way out yet. But the athletic department does have an estimate figures of the trip.

A spokesperson for the Wolverines said on Tuesday that Michigan’s football’s trip to Rome has an estimated price tag of $750,000 to $800,000.

The university has not yet filled a Freedom of Information Act, requested by MLive for the expense report. Michigan previously said that the trip was sponsored by an anonymous, private donation to the football program.

The Head coach of the team, Jim Harbaugh has kept the name of the donor in privacy, per the donor’s request.

Michigan did not bring its entire football club roster to Rome, as several players stayed behind for a variety reasons like class, previously scheduled events, family situations.

The team also did not bring its large travel party it usually brings to long trips,  such as postseason bowls. Michigan had more than 400 people in its travel party for the Citrus Bowl in 2015.

The total number of people that went to Rome -- while not yet reported by Michigan -- was nowhere near that size.

"It was an incredible trip. The best thing I've ever been a part of on a football team," Harbaugh said Monday on The Rich Eisen Show. "The wonderful thing was that it was really all about the players and their experience. Not all learning is done in the classroom or on a football field.

"From an educational standpoint, from a team bonding standpoint - it was an experience that had everything."
