Ireland’s Indian-Origin Prime Minster Campaigns to Lift Ban on Abortions May 25, 2018 05:36

Indian-origin Prime Minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar in a campaign made an effort to lift a ban on abortions, as the country gets set to vote in a referendum on a crucial issue on Friday.A year ago, taking charge as ‘Taoiseach’ as a major test of his leadership, Varadkar has been urging electors to ensure a high turnout in the referendum on repealing the Eight Amendment of Irish Constitution which restricts access to abortions severely. The case of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian-origin dentist who died of blood poisoning in Ireland in October 2012 after denying a life-saving abortion is among the cases that is being highlighted by campaigners in favour of a “Yes” vote.Halappanavar's father Andanappa Yalagi said, "I hope the people of Ireland remember my daughter Savita on the day of the referendum, and that what happened to her won't happen to any other family. I think about her every day. She didn't get the medical treatment she needed because of the eighth amendment. They must change the law.”"I do hope we will see more people taking part in this referendum, an exercise in democracy," Varadkar said.Politicians are permitted to campaign on a personal basis, while two other major parties of Ireland, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are not taking official positions on the referendum."Ultimately laws are just written in black and white, they are text in a piece of law but what has to be behind those laws is individuals, people's families and how those laws have affected them in the process," the leader of the liberal-conservative Fine Gail party said.If Ireland votes for “yes” in a majority, Government intends to permit terminations within the initial 12 weeks, subject to medical advice and cooling-off period and in a restricted fashion between 12 and 24 weeks. In the meantime, the hashtag #hometovote is being trending on Twitter which has been mobilized by “yes” supporters, who wish to get as many Irish voters as possible casting their vote. India-Origin Scientist to Create Pollution Free World May 25, 2018 04:43

An India-origin scientist Govinder Singh Pawar has stepped closer to moving to a pollution free world, creating a photoelectrode - a semiconductor that can store solar energy in more efficient way than any other method and as well use it to generate enough voltage to extract hydrogen from water.Pawar, a scientist at University of Exeter, Britain has been working on this project for about past two and half years as his PhD. He said that over 85 percent of the world’s energy today is sourced from fossil fuel all over the world.“The amount of energy we consume today is only half of what it is expected to be in 2050,” he explained in his new paper that was published in the science journal ‘Nature’ in February. The emerging threat of climate change and perpetual human fight over oil, the time is way past to find a sustainable and alternative source of fuel that is scalable and can be implemented widely.Pawar’s parents moved to Britain over 20 years ago. He completed his Master’s at Loughborough University. In his third and fourth year of college, Pawar realized he was most beguiled by his research projects when they related to energy.“I was always interested in electrochemistry and physical chemistry. New sources of energy for the future in a green and sustainable way had interested me greatly. I wanted to pursue a PhD related to that,” Pawar said. Now, he set out to aid in solving one of the the planet’s biggest problems, under the guidance of Dr. Asif Tahir, who also supervised Pawar for his paper. If Pawar’s material has scaled well, it could be one day be an effective cost-saving technique in propelling a large part of the world into a hydrogen economy.By Sowmya Sangam

A Teaser of Federal Front Released In the Oath Taking Ceremony of Kumara Swamy May 23, 2018 12:42

The BJP’s failure to form a government in Karnataka has come as a silver lining for the opposition parties ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Now, perhaps, in a possible show of unity, several prominent Opposition leaders and chief ministers will be sharing the podium at the swearing-in ceremony of Janata Dal (Secular)’s H D Kumaraswamy as Karnataka chief minister in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The event will also be used as an opportunity by the Opposition to showcase its strength as parties are now setting sight on the equations ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The ceremony will be participated by two main Opposition heavyweights, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi.Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo, Mayawati is also set to travel to Bengaluru to attend Kumaraswamy’s oath-taking ceremony. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also confirmed his attendance, as did Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Other politicians include West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, CPI(M) chief Sitaram Yechury, former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, NC’s Farooq Abdullah, DMK chief M. Stalin, and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan. The swearing-in of Kumaraswamy as the chief minister of Karnataka, seen as the convergence of the Opposition to take on the BJP in 2019, might as well be the emergence of an alternate front that can give BJP a fight. The representatives of the political parties, which will be present at the podium, together form more than 40% of the vote share which these parties got during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in which BJP came first with 31% of the vote share. The BJP’s vote share then had translated into 285 seats for them. Currently BJP has 274 Lok Sabha seats. The Opposition leaders present at the event also represent more than 157 seats together. This includes heads of parties like Congress which has 48 seats, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) with 34 seats, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with 16 seats, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) with 11 seats, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) with nine seats, and other regional party heads which together take the tally to 157. Sterlite Protests in Tamil Nadu Turns Violent, 11 Killed in Police Firing May 23, 2018 12:37

A three month long protest against Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper Unit in Tamil Nadu turned violent by decease of at least 11 people and 50 people injuring in Thoothukudi district on Tuesday. A march towards the district collector’s office to mark the 100th day of the protests was organized to demand the shut down of Sterlite Industries Ltd’s Plant.District collector N. Venkatesh in view of the law and order challenge issued section 144 in the area and allowed the protesters to demonstrate at a ground area near the Thoothukudi old bus stand. Things went out of hand for the local administration when thousands of local residents marched toward the collector’s office with black flags and to stop them from entering the office premises, the police resorted a lathi charge and started firing tear gas shells resulting in mob retaliating stones and set police vehicles and Sterlite employees quarters on fire. “Who gave them (police) permission to shoot people above the knee,” asked S. Raja, one of the protesters and member of the Anti-Sterlite Committee. He alleged that those who were killed in the firing had bullet injuries above their waist.Following the violence, Tamil Nadu chief Minister Edapaadi K. Palaniswami held a meeting with ministers and police officials subsequently issuing a statement appealing to the people to maintain peace. “Around 20,000 people marched towards the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi, torched police vehicles and vehicles inside the collector’s office and also pelted stones. Since protesters indulged in violence, the police had to resort to firing to bring the situation under control,” the government statement said. The opposition and various organizations protested across the state whereas the Tamil Nadu Sangam has called for an indefinite shutdown across Thoothukudi. About 2000 police personnel were deployed across the town and in neighboring districts. The Tamil Nadu state government announced compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the deceased families, Rs. 3 lakh for those with serious injuries, Rs. 1 lakh for minor injuries and as well government jobs for the family members of the deceased.  Congress president Rahul Gandhi took it to Twitter terming the “gunning down by the police as a brutal example of state-sponsored terrorism.” He further posted, “These citizens were murdered for protesting against injustice. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these martyrs and the injured.”By Sowmya Sangam
