Under a new proposed bill motorists in Michigan will be able to renew their driver’s license every eight years rather than four years.
If the proposal is accepted, then Michigan will join about a dozen other states and Districts of Columbia, which currently are allowing people to renew their driver’s license once in eight years.
Michigan State Republican Kosowski, who has proposed the new bill, said that the new bill will help more than seven million people from having to pay $18 standard renewal fee for every four years.
Kosowsli has said that “Secretary of the State employee always tells that they are too busy, so this bill will eliminate some of that”.
The important thing is that people will get a financial break, $18 is not a huge amount, but then again it is a lot of money.
Michigan people are allowed to renew their driver’s license online or by mail once in every 4 years. Now the state law requires people to renew their license in person at a Secretary of State office once in every 8 years. After the license are issued it gets expired on the birthday of the applicant.
The bill has been referred to the Michigan House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. A similar bill was introduced in previous sessions by Kosowski which did not advance.
Ruth Johnson Michigan Secretary of State did not put weight on the measure but said that they are reviewing the bill and he does not have a position on it at the time.
Spokesperson Fred Woodhams said that “it was important to note that people an renew their license by mail or any other cycle, so that they do not need to come to a Secretary of State office “.
Last year Georgia began to offer the 8 year license and Nevada is transitioning to licenses that are valid for 8 years instead of 4 years. The other states which allowed renewal of driving license every 8 years are Arkansas, Florida and New York.
South Carolina allows renewal of driver’s license once for every 10 years; people who are 65 or older have to renew their license once every five years.
