Multiple Indian American Kids Find Their Place As Finalists For The Odyssey Of The Mind Competition April 19, 2019 05:16

Two elementary school teams from the North Edison, comprising of several Indian-American kids have reached the world’s finals stage of the Odyssey of the Mind competition. For those who aren’t aware of what the competition is about, it is technically a problem solving competition that includes students right from kindergarten till college. The competition is going to be held in the Michigan State University from May 22.Following the neck to neck fight, the Edison Board of Education passed a unanimous decision on April 15th, 2019 congratulating the two teams, each comprising of 7 team members to make it through to the finals. The kids are from the Martin Luther Elementary School and are going to be taking part in the final rounds which will be held on the 22nd of next month. There was an uproar of screams and cheers from the parents and fellow students congratulating the finalists once the announcements were made and declared readily. The groups contain students from Grade 3-5 and the students in the finals include Annika Jeena, Aksh Doshi, Carter Williams, Chaitanya Palasamudram, Jay Chavan, Pranavi Ganti, Riya Lakhihal, Charlotte Dressel, Nitya Puli, Caleb Foo, Kaveesh Singh, Avika Shukla, Riti Sarje and Pranav Srinivasan, all of whom are residents of the Edison township. The students will be coached and supported by Ruth Vogel and Kim Jackson, both of whom are part of the MLK Elementary School and also do volunteer as OM coaches for the students involved. They are going to accompany the students to Michigan next month. In a conducted press release, Kim Jackson addressed saying that each one of the kids who are not in the finals have worked their way through and did come together to solve some of the predefined long term problem effectively. They have found effective ways to present the judges with an efficient solution altogether. The Odyssey of Mind (OM) is a two part competition which includes solving a predefined long term problem along with a spontaneous portion by coming up with solutions to any of the problem that the kids have not seen or witnessed before. The long term predefined problem often tends to take months to complete and does include and extensive amount of theatrical performance, construction as well as design. The same is not the case with the spontaneous problem because the same does occur the day of the competition itself. The competition has been in effect since 1978 and each year attracts over 5000 schools and colleges from across 2 dozen countries across the globe. Siz of the finalists including Aksh Doshi, Carter William, Chai Palasamudram, Jay Chavan, Pranavi Ganti and Riya Lakhihal have spent the majority of their school year trying to work and perfect the eight minute routine on the “Opposites Distract” problem. They have actively involved themselves in it, writing humorous scripts, building props, colourful costumes and so much more altogether. And the best and the most interesting part of this is the fact that they did so without any kind of adult help. OM has been around for quite some time now and instills a sense of value, team work and better communication among the participants. This year, it is definitely a moment of pride for the Indians across the world because of the dominance of so many Indian American kids making it to the finals of the Odyssey of the Mind competition.By Somapika Dutta

WhatsApp To Soon Block Chat Screenshots (Allegedly!) April 18, 2019 12:28

With the advent of WhatsApp, people have had a very streamlined mode of communication without having to go out of their way to pay for the same. While there has been a plethora of positives with this application, the same is believed to have brought quite a good chunk of negatives with it too, the lack of privacy being one. Owing to the chats being open, the screenshot feature has been very prevalent on this specific social media platform. But, a recent report about a forthcoming update of WhatsApp is believed to block the chat screenshots and everyone is losing their minds. While this application has been undergoing quite a good chunk of upgrades and changes over the course of months, the same is about to undergo a few more.As we very well have heard news about, this Facebook owned social media application is soon going to have its dark mode for the Android users. Not just that, the developers is apparently also working on the animated emojis. Amidst them all, the one update that has left everyone in a trance of shock is the possibility of blocking out the chat screenshots. In a report issued by WeBetaInfo last month, they stated saying that they are working on a specific authentication feature for the Android users which will allow them to natively lock the application using the fingerprint scanner on their devices. A new updated to this report suggests that the developers are planning to add a functionality that would block any of the users to take screenshots of the chats when the said feature is enabled. It seems more like a hassle than a boon because enabling the feature doesn’t mean that the receiver won’t be able to take screenshots of the chat but only you. That being said, one good thing about this is the fact that enabling this authentication feature will actually help in helping the users answer the messages or calls even when the app is locked. The feature or the authentication process is actually still under development and doesn’t have any expected date of release as such. In order to make the application more interactive, the developers are also focusing on enhancing the Doodle feature. They are adding in more stickers and interactive emojis to make the experience even better for the users. The latest addition of the “search” feature for the sticker and the emoji search is most definitely one of the amazing factors that is skyrocketing its success altogether. There is still a doubt whether or not the chat screenshot feature on WhatsApp is going to be added or not, so all we can do is just wait and watch!By Somapika Dutta

TikTok App Removed From Google, Apple Stores in India April 17, 2019 12:15

TikTok, the Chinese video-sharing application, has been removed from the Google and the Apple app stores in India a day after the Indian government asked that access to the popular application, which has more than 230 million downloads in India, be banned. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had on Tuesday asked Google and Apple to block the application after the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the original Madras High Court order on April 3.The Madras High Court had, in an ex-parte order, prohibited the download and use of the popular mobile video-sharing app. The government had been directed to prohibit downloading of TikTok and had prohibited the media from telecasting the videos made using TikTok Mobile App.The court also asked the Centre to answer whether the Union of India will enact a statute, like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, enacted by the United States, to prevent the children becoming cyber or online victims. In a statement, TikTok said that the company has faith in the Indian judicial system. "We are optimistic about an outcome that would be well received by over 120 million monthly active users in India, who continue using TikTok to showcase their creativity and capture moments that matter in their everyday lives," a TikTok spokesperson said.During the hearing on Tuesday, TikTok submitted before the Court that it has technology in place to filter inappropriate content, reports Bar and Bench. TikTok also claimed that the ex-parte order of Madras HC is arbitrary and illegal, as the ban on the download and use of the app not only curtails its right to freedom of speech and expression but will also lead to financial loss as well as a loss of jobs. However, the Bench declined to stay the ban and adjourned the matter to April 24.The Court has indicated that its primary concern is regarding the safety of TikTok users. However, before reconsidering the restriction imposed on the download of the app, the Bench has indicated that it wants to examine written submissions in the matter. With over 54 million users every month, TikTok allows its users to create and share videos. The Madras High Court had banned it after deeming it “inappropriate for children.”By Sowmya Sangam

‘Don’t Spoil the Endgame’: Russo Brothers After Footage Leak April 17, 2019 11:52

After a leak of five-minute footage from the upcoming Marvel film, Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers issued a tweet on Wednesday addressing to “the greatest fans in the world”. #DontSpoilTheEndgame pic.twitter.com/YZhbrwcijJ — Russo Brothers (@Russo_Brothers) April 16, 2019 In it, a photograph of a letter, the directors pleaded their fans not to spoil the movie for others in the coming weeks. “Thanos demands your silence”, they added at the end of the letter. The Russo brothers had issued a similar letter in 2018 when Avengers: Infinity Wars had released. In it, the two had also mentioned the hashtag #ThanosDemandsYourSilence. The team behind the movie have reportedly gone to extreme lengths to avoid the real endings being leaked, shooting a total of five ending sequences. Part of this was to protect against the tendency of Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo, who had infamously leaked the title of the latest movie the previous year. The leaks - which we will not be published - are available on subreddits like /r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers. With just nine days remaining for the release of the film, it is worth waiting for the film’s release. Marvel Studios president, Kevin Spiegel, has promised an ending that no superhero movie has ever given before. The film will star Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. -Sowmya Sangam

‘I Am Not Comfortable with Term Actor of Color’: Actor-Comedian Vir Das April 17, 2019 11:45

The Indian actor and comedian Vir Das, who moved to international stage with his Netflix special ‘Abroad Understanding’ said he not comfortable with the term “actor of color”. He said diversity is important, but artists should be cast because of talent, not skin color. "I am not comfortable with the term actor of color. I'm an actor and I am there to play a character," Vir told IANS. "My color is secondary to my talent. So to me, these are the larger questions that I don't think about. I am an artist, and for me, it is about how can I make the line from the page sound good," he added. After spreading laughs with his comedy tour and Netflix specials, Vir is making a name for himself with his dramedy Federal Bureau of Investigation series Whiskey Cavalier, which is aired in India on Colors Infinity and streams on Amazon Prime Video. The show follows the tough but tender FBI agent who has a code name of Whiskey Cavalier. Vir stars as a secret agent Jai Datta. It also features Scott Foley, Lauren Cohan, Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams, and Josh Hopkins. "I had never done American TV before. I am happy to be part of the project. I am a small part of a very big show," he said. Talking about Indian stories finding a place in the narrative in the West, Vir said, "We are the second largest audience in the world. You can't ignore that... And we have stories that need to be told and stories need to be catered towards us as well. "We watch 'Game of Thrones' as much America watches it and we watch 'Avengers' as much anybody else watches it. "So, representation is important. Diversity is important. But the right kind of diversity and representation is important." Vir, who was named one of the world's Top 10 comedians to watch out for in 2017 by U.S.-based Variety, asserted a need to create "nuanced and layered characters". "For me, it is not about nationality or about color, but about identity. Is there something which you can put in your character that is uniquely you and that your people will identify with? It is less about roles and more about characteristics." Apart from comedy skits, Vir has featured in films like "Delhi Belly", "Badmaash Company", "Revolver Rani", "31st October" and "Shivaay". He is actively working on producing content. "This year, there will be one or two Bollywood films, another Netflix special and hopefully more American TV shows. We are now looking forward to producing at least three or four shows. We will kind of become the destination for writers and comedians and filmmakers to come in and say ‘If you have a crazy idea that you don't feel anybody else gets, then we want to be the production house that produces it'. "Right now, I am just spending time reading scripts from writers from all over the country to see what we want to produce." -Sangam Sowmya

Indians Spend 17 Hours Per Week on Social Media, Highest in the World April 17, 2019 10:15

India is overcoming every country in internet adoption trends and has secured a new record of spending the highest amount of time on social media in the world. As per McKinsey's latest report on Indian online trends, there are an estimated 560 million internet subscribers in India as of September 2018. And that number's expected to increase significantly by 2025.The report shows statistics comparing India and China as the two nations leading the online charge, where internet penetration still has a long way to go.Indians spend more time on social media than online users in China or the United States. Indians spend about 17 hours per week on social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. Reportedly the secret behind securing this new world record is due to access to cheap Android smartphones and 4G cellular data.Besides, Indians are also just behind China when it comes to app downloads on phones - 12.3 billion apps downloaded by Indians in 2018, reveals a report from 2018. After Indonesia, India is the second fastest in the world when it comes adopting digital technologies nationwide which is a huge achievement, given India's huge population and language complexities compared to Indonesia. The report is extremely optimistic about India's digital appetite and individual online growth and wraps up concluding that empowering digital businesses and new online initiatives is fundamental to continuing India's success story as a digitally connected nation.According to an estimation in 2018, there was around 326 million social network users in India, an increase from close to 168 million in 2016. The most popular social networks that Indians prefer most to use are YouTube and Facebook, followed by instant messaging application WhatsApp. Facebook is projected to reach close to 319 million users in India by 2021.By Sowmya Sangam

Jack Ma, Co-Founder of Alibaba Endorses 12-Hour, 6 Days Working Policy, Netizens Slam Him for Slave Culture April 17, 2019 09:12

Jack Ma, the billionaire co-founder of shopping giant Alibaba and the Chinese politician has defended the "996 system" which means working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for six days a week. He said that without this way of working, the economy would be affected. He preached that the 996 system is indeed a blessing. However, his statement didn’t go well with people and they called him promoting a slave culture. Ma has been passing on this work style from his earlier days from the 90s. He always wished to emulate the "hard-working spirit of Silicon Valley" to compete against them. In a speech to his employees recently he said, "I personally think that 996 is a huge blessing. How do you achieve the success you want without paying extra effort and time?" He mentioned that 996 is not an overtime policy. He said those who don't conform by 996 won't get the taste and reward of hard work. He even said that if his employees are not ready to work for 12 hours then they should not even come to Alibaba. "We don’t need those who comfortably work eight hours,” he said. People on the internet were actually not impressed and some called him promoting the slave culture. This might be good idea but there is no point of working for success that doesnt allow you to have time for your own family or any other social aspect. Corporations need to exist to serve social needs and not taking it away. Life is much beyond work.Jack ma - speak of life — Shrikanth, M (@shrikanthmsk) April 17, 2019 Jack ma promote soft slavery putting people away from personal life and family! — JamalNLN (@JamalNln) April 17, 2019 I have been a big fan of Jack Ma. But it ends today. This is absolutely absurd. Sure. If I was a co-founder and held a significant share of the company, working 12 hour days is worth it. But when you’re an employee on a fixed salary, that’s a complete different can of worms. — Oscar Cao (@oscarc168) April 14, 2019 I don't want to order anything from Alibaba. Ever. — Meℓiѕ (@MelikaNoKaOi) April 16, 2019 More and more people have criticized the policy and have asked others to put a ban on Alibaba altogether. Ma co-founded Alibaba in the year 1999. Currently, it is one of the world's biggest internet companies with a market value of approximately $490 billion (£374 billion). By Sowmya Sangam
