Millions of workers across the country will be seeing a rise in their wages, as 19 states are going to bump up their minimum wages as the new year begins.

New York, California and Michigan are among the top states where an increase in wages are going to take effect from Saturday or Sunday.

Washington DC and Massachusetts states will be having the highest new minimum wages at $11 per hour. Where as California is going to rise its minimum wages to $10.50 for big businesses.

The New York state will be taking a more regional approach, minimum wages will be increased to $11 in New York city, wages in the suburbs will be increased to $10 and in upstate the minimum wages will be increased to $9.70.

Voters in Arizona, Maine, Colorado and Washington approved increases in this year's election.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry leading a coalition of business groups urged the Supreme court to not increase the minimum wages.

But the court ruled over the petition and hike of minimum wages will take effect from the New year.

Seven other states are automatically raising the wages which are based upon indexing.

A fast-food worker and labor organizer ‘Alvin Major’ from New York City said the increase in minimum wages will help thousands of workers to get their lives better.
