5.9 Earthquake hit around Nicobar Islands

A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale today (March 14th) hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A unit of the Ministry of Earth Sciences the earthquake’s epicenter was in the Nicobar Islands region, occurred at 8:21 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Center of Seismology.

The earthquake was not so powerful to merit a tsunami warning. There is a dedicated tsunami warning center in India that sends warning to states and neighboring littoral countries in case of an earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or property.

Another earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale jolted Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir at 5:48 a.m.
